Make all the necessary connections before you plug in or turn on the receiver.  
Caution:  
Wh ere you place you r speakers (n ot su pplied) can m ake a n oticeable  
differen ce in you r system ’s sou n d. Th e gu idelin es in th is section will  
h elp you ch oose th e best location s. After you u se you r receiver for a  
wh ile, you m igh t wan t to try differen t location s for you r speakers.

Bass respon se depen ds largely on speaker location . For stron g bass,  
place th e speakers in th e corn ers of th e room . If you wan t even stron ger  
bass, place th e speakers directly on th e floor. If th e bass is too stron g,  
m ove th e speakers sligh tly away from th e corn ers of th e room , or raise  
th em 6 to 18 in ch es off th e floor. You can bu y speaker stan ds at you r  
local RadioSh ack store.

Th e distan ce between th e speakers sh ou ld be abou t th e sam e as th e

between th e speakers. If you place th e speakers too close togeth er, you  
redu ce th e stereo separation . If you place th em too far apart, you redu ce  
th e bass effect an d create a hole in th e m iddle of th e sou n d.  
Normal Listening Point  
Most speakers h ave a tweeter dispersion an gle of abou t 60 degrees.  
Ideally, you r listen in g position sh ou ld be ju st in side th e overlap area of  
th e tweeter dispersion . You can an gle th e speakers toward you for better  
stereo effect.  
• Surround speakers generally sound  
best if you position them above ear  
level.  
• To avoid picture interference of a  
nearby TV, use magnetically shielded  
speaker systems. This is particularly  
important for the center speaker since  
it is usually located closest to the TV.  
To position you r speakers for su rrou n d sou n d, place th e fron t speakers  
at th e fron t of you r listen in g area, an d place th e (rear) su rrou n d speak-  
ers beh in d or to th e sides of th e listen in g poin t (see “Usin g Advan ced  
Sou n d Option s” on Page 22). Place th e cen ter speaker above, below, or  
beh in d th e TV. If you place it beside th e TV, th e pictu re m ay n ot coin -  
cide with th e sou n d.

Preparing the Speaker Wires  
Speaker wire con sists of two con du ctors (in dividu al wires) en cased in  
in su lation an d is u su ally color -coded or m arked with a ridge alon g on e  
side so you can iden tify each con du ctor. Use th ese m arkin gs as a gu ide  
to h elp you properly con n ect th e speakers to you r receiver.  
Follow these guidelines when you select  
and connect speakers.  
• Only connect speakers that are rated  
at between 6 and 16 Ohms.  
Follow th ese steps to prepare th e speaker wires.  
• Be sure you properly connect all  
speakers.  
• Do not connect two pairs of speakers  
to a single set of terminals at the  
same time.  
Wire Strands  
• Optimus and other high-quality speak-  
ers have color-coded speaker termi-  
nals (red for positive polarity and  
black for negative polarity). Use these  
color-coded terminals as a guide to  
help you properly connect the speak-  
ers to the receiver.

Troubleshooting  
If the receiver is not working as it should, the following suggestions might help. If you follow the suggestions in this chart and  
the receiver still does not work properly, contact your local RadioShack store for assistance.
