Chaindialingisusedtostoreaverylongdialingsequence.Youcanspread

sequenceastype“Chain”.Chaintellsthesystemthatthedialing
sequenceisnotcompletedandthatthereismoretofollow.Thelast
keyinthesequencemustbeanyotherdialtype(eitherFAX,TELorF/T).
YoucanuseanycombinationofOne-Touch,Speed-Dialandmanually
dialednumbersinachain.

Chaindialingmakesusingaccesscodeseasy.Sometimesyoumaywantto

Using Remote Codes
TheRemoteActivationCode(*51)isusedinF/TandTADmodes.TheDeactivation
Code(#51)isusedonlyinF/Tmode.
UsingtheActivationCode
WhenyouareattheMFC,youwillprobablyanswerincomingcallsbeforeyourMFC
or answering machine is programmed to pick up. If you answer a call and no one
seems to be on the line, assume it is a fax message. Do not hang up. You must
activateyourMFCtotakeoverthecallfirst.Ifyouareonanextension/external
phone, press *51 and wait for your MFC to respond before you hang up. After
3secondsyouwillhearreceivingtones(chirps)throughthehandsetofextension
phone.Thenhangup.Youcanrepeatthecodeasmanytimesasneeded.YourMFC
willtakeoverthecallandprintthefaxmessage.Ifyourcallerwantstotalkbefore
sendingthefax,youcanhaveaconversationfirstandthenactivateyourMFCwith
thecode.
TheRemoteActivationCodecanalsobeusedbyyourcallers.Whenyouareusinga

UsingtheDeactivationCode
WhenyourMFCisinF/Tmode,sometimesitwillansweracallthatisnotfaxcalling
tones(atelephonecallormanualfax).Itwillrespondwithadoublering (short,
short)toalertyoutotakeover.BecausetheMFChasalreadyansweredthecall,only
theMFCwillring,extensionphonesarenolongerconnectedtothecall.Youcantake
overthecallatanextensionphoneusingtheDeactivationCode(#51).
Pickupthehandsetonanothertelephoneandpress#51quicklyduringthe
silencebetweenthedoubleringpattern.WhentheMFChearsthecodeitwill
stopringingandletyouspeakwiththecaller.Ifnooneisonthelineorsomeoneis
tryingtosendyouamanualfax,sendthecallbacktotheMFC(*51).

How to Use an External TAD with the MFC
WhenyouhaveaTelephoneAnsweringDeviceonthefaxphoneline,theTADwill

localtelephonecompanycanprovidemoreinformationaboutthisservice.Theservice
isusuallyofferedasamonthlychargetoyournormaltelephonebill.

comesintoyourmainnumber(oradditionaldistinctiveringingnumbers),allthe
phoneswillringuntilyouoranansweringmachinepickupthecall.(Seethechart

IfyouwanttheMFCtoallowatelephoneansweringdevice(TAD)toansweronlythe
mainnumber(s),youmustleavetheMFCinManualmode.Youcanplugthe
