Your GE speakerphone is designed to give you flexibility in use, and high
quality perform ance. To get the m ost from your new telephone, we
suggest that you take a few m inutes right now to read through this
instruction m anual.

INSTALLATION AND SET UP
Your GE Speakerphone can be placed on a desk or tabletop, or can
be m ounted on the wall. After you decide which type of installa-
tion you want, refer to the appropriate installation diagram .
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
REQUIREMENTS
A m odular jack USOC: CA11A (RJ 11C) or
a CA14A (RJ 14C) is required.
Installation of this telephone in locations
with 4-prong jacks or with hard-wired
outlets requires additional converters (not
included). The dealer from whom you
purchased the system , or a telephone
supply store, can advise you regarding
the proper converter.

Installation of a 9V battery is optional, however when installed,
the battery provides better perform ance for the speakerphone.

For your safety, please follow these precautions:

SPEAKERPHONE LOCATION
For best speakerphone perform ance, avoid the following:
•
Areas with high background noise. (The m icrophone m ight pick
up these sounds and prevent the speakerphone from going into
the receiving m ode when you finish talking.)
•

Surfaces affected by vibration.
Recessed areas such as in a corner, under a cupboard, or next
to a cabinet, which can generate an echo effect.

SPEAKERPHONE USE
Note the following guidelines when using the speakerphone:
•

The speakerphone works sim ilar to a two-way radio in that you
can only listen or talk at one tim e.
Stay reasonably close to the phone so that you can be clearly
heard by the person to whom you are talking.
You can adjust the speaker volum e by sliding the VOLUME
control on the right side of the base unit.
The speakerphone indicator light com es on when the
speakerphone is in use.
MAKING A CALL
1 Press the SPEAKER button instead of picking up the handset.
2 Adjust volum e if needed.
3 Make your call.
4 Press SPEAKER again to hang up the phone.
RECEIVING A CALL
Make sure that the RINGER switch is set to HI or LOW or the phone
will not ring.
1 Press the SPEAKER button instead of picking up the handset
when the phone rings.
2 Adjust volum e if needed.
3 Press SPEAKER again to hang up the phone.
SWITCHING BETWEEN SPEAKER AND HANDSET
You can switch between speakerphone and handset while the
phone is dialing a num ber, or anytim e during a conversation.
•

Speaker to Handset — Pick up the handset.
Handset to Speaker — Press SPEAKER, then hang up handset.
TIP: If you’re using the speakerphone in a noisy environment
and are in listening mode, you can improve the listening perfor-
mance by pressing MUTE. Just be sure to press MUTE again
before you try to speak.

USING THE FEATURES
VOLUME CONTROLS
Control the volum e of both the handset and the speakerphone:

TEMPORARY TONE FEATURE
If you have Pulse (rotary) service, and want to access custom er
calling services that require Tone dialing, such as getting inform a-
tion from a local bank, you can use this feature.
1 Press the TONE button (

) after you have connected to the
service to enable Tone dialing.
2 When you hang up, the phone autom atically returns to Pulse
dialing m ode.
MUTE BUTTON
The MUTE button deactivates the m icrophone for both the
speakerphone and the handset, so that anything you say cannot
be heard by the caller on the other end of the line.
•
Press MUTE to m ute the m icrophone (the indicator light
turns on).
•
Press MUTE again to continue the phone conversation
(the indicator light turns off).
FLASH BUTTON
Press the FLASH button instead of using the hook switch to
activate custom er calling services such as call waiting or call
transfer, which are provided by your local phone com pany.

REDIAL BUTTON
Redial the last num ber you called by pressing the REDIAL button
after you get a dial tone.
NOTE: The Redial feature holds in memory the last phone
number you dialed (as many as 32 digits). If you pressed any
numbers after dialing the phone number, (for example, when
accessing a voice-menu system) those numbers also are redialed.
HOLD BUTTON
Use the HOLD button to interrupt a phone conversation without
hanging up, and then pick up the conversation again on the sam e
phone or any extension.
NOTE: When hold is on, the HOLD indicator light is active.
USING HOLD WITH THE HANDSET
1 Press HOLD (the indicator light com es on).
2 Hang up (the indicator light blinks).
3 Pick up the handset , press SPEAKER, or pick up an extension
phone to release hold (the indicator light turns off).
USING HOLD WITH THE SPEAKERPHONE
1 Press HOLD (the speakerphone indicator light turns off, and the
hold indicator light blinks).
2 Press SPEAKER, pick up the handset or an extension phone to
release hold.

MEMORY DIALING
Store as m any as 12 num bers in m em ory for easy
dialing. Three can be stored in the Em ergency
Quick Dial locations, and nine additional num bers
can be stored in the num bered keys (1-9).

STORING THE LAST NUMBER DIALED
Store the last num ber you dialed by pressing REDIAL instead of
dial a phone num ber (in step 3 of the preceding procedure).
ADDING A PAUSE TO THE DIALING SEQUENCE
Use the REDIAL button to insert a delay in the dialing sequence
when storing a num ber, for exam ple, when you need to dial 9 to
get an outside line.
Press REDIAL at the point in the dialing sequence in which a
pause is required. Each pause counts toward the 16 digit lim it.
CHANGING A STORED NUMBER
Change a stored num ber by replacing it with a different num ber.
CLEARING A STORED NUMBER
1 Pick up the handset or press the SPEAKER button.
2 Press the STORE button.
3 Press the MEM DIAL button; then press an EMERGENCY QUICK
DIAL button or a num ber key (1-9).
4 Hang up.

DIALING A NUMBER FROM MEMORY
You can dial num bers from m em ory when using the handset
or speakerphone. When you get a dial tone, press the MEM DIAL
button followed by the m em ory location (1-9) for the num ber you
want to dial.
CAUTION: If you make test calls to emergency numbers, remain
on the line and explain the reason for the call. Also, make these
calls in off-peak hours, such as early morning or late evening.
DIALING THE EMERGENCY QUICK DIAL NUMBERS
To dial one of these num bers, just press its button after you get a
dial tone.
CHAIN DIALING FROM MEMORY
Use this feature to m ake calls which require a sequence of num -
bers, for instance if you use a calling card for a frequently called
long distance num ber. Basically, you dial each part of the se-
quence from m em ory. The following exam ple shows how you can
use chain dialing to m ake a call through a long distance service:

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
Problem

No dial tone.
Won't dial out
• Check hook switch to m ake

• Make sure speakerphone indicator com es

• Unplug the phone, wait 30 seconds, and
plug the phone back in.
Phone doesn’t ring

line. (The total LN of all phones should

for your calling area, Usually 5.)
Low handset or
speaker volum e
• Check the volum e settings (see p. 8).
Light and tone
feedback flutter when
dialing in PULSE m ode.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
To keep your GE telephone working and looking good, follow
these few sim ple guidelines:
•
Avoid putting the phone near heating appliances and devices
that generate electrical noise. (i.e., m otors, fluorescent lam ps.)
•

Phone should not be exposed to direct sunlight or m oisture.
Avoid dropping the handset and other rough treatm ent.
Clean telephone with a soft cloth. (Rem em ber to first unplug
the phone from the wall outlet.)
•

Never use a strong cleaning agent or abrasive powder, as this
will dam age the finish.
Retain the original packaging for future use.
REN NUMBER
On the bottom of this equipm ent is a label indicating, am ong
other inform ation, the FCC Registration num ber and Ringer
Equivalence Num ber (REN) for the equipm ent. You m ust, upon
request, provide this inform ation to your telephone com pany.
The REN is useful in determ ining the num ber of devices you m ay
connect to your telephone line and still have all of these devices
ring when your telephone num ber is called. In m ost (but not all)
areas, the sum of the RENs of all devices connected to one line
should not exceed 5. To be certain of the num ber of devices you
m ay connect to your line as determ ined by the REN, you should
contact your local telephone com pany.

INTERFERERENCE INFORMATION
This Class B digital apparatus m eets all requirem ents of the
Canadian Interference-Causing Equipm ent Regulations.
This equipm ent generates and uses radio frequency energy which
m ay interfere with residential radio and television reception if not
properly installed and used in accordance with instructions
contained in this m anual. Reasonable protection against such

practicable, m ay notify you that tem porary discontinuance of
service m ay be required. Where prior notice is not practicable and
the circum stances warrant such action, the telephone com pany
m ay tem porarily discontinue service im m ediately.
The telephone com pany m ay m ake changes in its com m unications
facilities, equipm ent, operations or procedures where such action
is required in the operation of its business. If these changes are
expected to affect the use or perform ance of your telephone
equipm ent, the telephone com pany will likely give you adequate
notice to allow you to m aintain uninterrupted service.
Notice m ust be given to the telephone com pany upon term ination
of your telephone from your line.
