The blue LED behind the front arrow buttons on the  
player lights when the unit is On.  
This button works only when the POWER button on the  
front of the player is pressed.  
Press to display DVD title menus for discs with multiple  
titles. If a disc has a single title, TITLE functions like  
MENU.

While disc playback is stopped, press to open the  
Welcome to Setup screen for adjusting DVD and  
Network settings.

Press to display the player’s My Music folder on the TV,  
which lists the music media files available on your  
networked computers. If a computer has not been  
detected, only the Connect menu appears.

networked computers. If a computer has not been  
detected, only the Connect menu appears.

program an d start it for th e first tim e.  
3 Con n ect th e player to your TV, audio system , an d

About your home network  
Before you begin , you m ust h ave a Microsoft Win dows-based h om e n etwork  
set up. If you do n ot already h ave a n etwork in stalled, you n eed to purch ase  
th e n etwork com pon en ts an d follow th e in stallation in struction s provided by  
th e m an ufacturer. Th e Gateway Con n ected DVD Player supports all m ajor types  
of h om e n etworks, in cludin g:  
Wired Eth ern et  
A wired Eth ern et n etwork con sists of two or m ore devices con n ected  
th rough an Eth ern et cable.  
Wireless access poin t  
A Wireless access poin t n etwork uses radio waves to lin k devices usin g a  
wireless n etwork card, an access poin t, an d a wired Eth ern et n etwork.  
Wireless peer-to-peer  
A wireless peer-to-peer n etwork con sists of two or m ore wireless Eth ern et  
com puters th at com m un icate with each oth er with out a wireless access  
poin t.  
If your Gateway Con n ected DVD Player cam e with a n etwork card, th e card is  
on e of th e followin g types:  
PC Card to Eth ern et adapter card  
Wireless 802.11b n etwork PC Card  
Important  
If you are using a wireless network with an access point,  
be sure to configure the access point according to the  
manufacturer's instructions before continuing.

Media Server program on to each com puter th at h as m edia files you wan t to  
access.  
Important  
Do not install Media Server until you make sure that your  
home network is working correctly.  
Computer requirements  
Com puter with Pen tium processor, 700 MHz or faster  
Network con n ection (wired or wireless)  
Hard drive with at least 20 MB of free space  
128 MB of m em ory  
CD drive  
Network PC Card (also kn own as PCMCIA). A wired Eth ern et adapter card  
or wireless n etwork card m ay already be in cluded with your player.  
Microsoft Win dows 98 SE, Win dows Me, Win dows 2000, or Win dows XP  
To install Media Server:  
1 Turn on th e com puter, th en close all open program s.  
2 In sert th e Gateway Connected DVD Player Installation CD in to th e CD drive  
on your com puter. Th e in stall wizard starts.  
3 Follow th e on -screen in struction s to fin ish th e in stallation .  
If you are prom pted to select your com puters n etwork card, click th e  
n etwork card you wan t to use, th en click Next.

5 Click th e plugin you wan t to use, th en click Scan. Your files are im ported  
in to Media Server. Your first-tim e setup of Media Server is com plete.  
Tips & Tricks  
Select only one plugin for each type of media. For example,  
to import MP3 files on a computer where you have both  
MusicMatch Jukebox and Windows Media Player installed,  
select only one of the two plugins.  
You can select only one plugin at a time. If you have more  
media for that plugin. Then select another plugin and  
import the media for that plugin.  
6 Repeat Steps 1-5 on each com puter you wan t to access from th e player.

Tips & Tricks  
If you are using a digital audio connection (COAXIAL or  
OPTICAL DIGITAL AUDIO), you must set the audio output  
format to match the digital decoding capabilities of your  
amplifier. For more information, see “Setting up digital  
audio” on page 39.  
Installing the network card  
Do n ot plug in th e players power cord or press th e POWER button on th e fron t

To install the network card:  
1 Make sure th at th e player is turn ed off.  
2 In sert your n etwork PC Card (on e m ay h ave been provided with your  
player) in to th e NETWORK CARD slot in th e back of th e player. Make sure  
th at th e n etwork card is pressed all th e way in .

Do not remove the card while the player is turned on. If  
you remove the card while the player is on, all playback  
of networked media will stop.

2 In sert two AAA batteries in to th e battery bay. Make sure th at th e batteries  
are orien ted accordin g to th e diagram in side th e battery bay.

3 Turn on your TV, th en use its con trols to set it to th e audio/video in put

Setting the IP address

iden tifier kn own as an IP address. IP addresses are used to direct n etwork traffic

separated by periods, such as 192.168.0.2.  
To change the way the IP address is assigned:

Caring for DVDs and other discs  
To keep th e disc clean , always h old it by th e edges. Do n ot touch th e  
surface. Wh en th e disc is n ot bein g played, store it in its case.

car parked in direct sun ligh t is likely to dam age th e disc because  
tem peratures m ay rise con siderably in side th e car.  
Cleaning discs

You can import files only from hard drives, not from  
mapped drives or removable media drives. If you have data  
on mapped or removable drives that you want to play  
through the DVD player, copy the files to your hard drive  
and import them from the hard drive.

Network troubleshooting  
Make sure th at Gateway D5 Stream in g Media Server is  
in stalled an d run n in g on th e com puter.  
Make sure th at you h ave selected a n etwork card in th e  
Media Server program . For m ore in form ation , see

Chapter 6: Troubleshooting  
Make sure th at your com puter h as an IP address assign ed to it. To ch eck,  
open Media Server, th en click th e About tab.  
Make sure th at you do n ot h ave a software firewall activated, such as  
Norton An tivirus or th e Win dows XP firewall.  
When I try to set up a network connection at the player, I get the  
message “No Network Card. Please insert a supported card and  
restart.”  
Make sure th at th e n etwork PC Card is in stalled correctly. For m ore  
in form ation , see “In stallin g th e n etwork card” on page 17.  
Make sure th at th e PC Card you are usin g is a supported card. View a list  
of supported PC Cards at support.gateway.com .  
The DVD player searches for a computer, but cannot find one.  
Make sure th at th e n etwork PC Card is in stalled correctly. For m ore  
in form ation , see “In stallin g th e n etwork card” on page 17.  
Make sure th at Gateway D5 Stream in g Media Server is run n in g on th e  
com puter.  
Turn th e DVD player off, th en turn it back on again .  
No songs are found when I try to import the files into Media Server.  
Open m usic files in a m edia player program such as Win dows Media Player,  
th en im port m usic files in to th e Gateway D5 Stream in g Media Server  
program usin g th e appropriate plugin . For m ore in form ation , see  
“Im portin g m edia usin g plugin s” on page 57.  
A song starts playing, then it stops for no reason.  
Try to play th e son g again . If th e son g still does n ot start, m ake sure th at  
your n etwork con n ection is workin g.  
If your n etwork uses a wireless access poin t, restart th e access poin t, th en  
restart th e switch or router.  
Media Server cannot find music files that I know are there.  
Make sure th at Media Server is in stalled an d run n in g on th e com puter th at  
h as th e m usic files.  
Make sure th at th e son gs are supported form ats (MP3 an d WMA).

Son gs m ust m eet th e bit rate requirem en ts (at least 80 kbps for MP3, at  
least 48 kbps for WMA). If th e m edia file does n ot m eet th e bit rate  
requirem en ts of th e DVD player, th e file is n ot displayed.  
Make sure th at Media Server is in stalled an d run n in g on th e com puter th at  
h as th e picture files.  
Place all pictures with in a sin gle folder on your com puter, th en im port th e  
im ages in to Media Server. For m ore in form ation , see “Im portin g m edia  
directly from your h ard drive” on page 55  
Media Server cannot find all of my pictures.  
Make sure th at th e pictures are JPEG or JPG form at.  
Pictures m ust be at least 171 pixels in width an d 108 pixels in h eigh t.  
Make sure th at Media Server is in stalled an d run n in g on th e com puter th at  
h as th e m ovie files.  
Open m ovie files in a m edia player program such as Win dows Media Player,  
th en im port th em in to Media Server. For m ore in form ation , see “Im portin g

Make sure th at th ey are supported m ovie form ats (MPEG-1 an d MPEG-2).  
AVI files are n ot supported.  
MPEGs m ust n ot h ave a display rate greater th an 3 MB/sec.  
DVD troubleshooting  
The player does not have power.  
Make sure th at th e AC power cord is securely plugged in to th e wall outlet.  
Make sure th at th e POWER button on th e fron t of th e player is pressed in .  
Make sure th at th e player is n ot in sleep m ode (press POWER on th e rem ote  
con trol).  
No picture appears on my TV.  
Make sure th at th e video cables are securely plugged in to th e player an d  
th e TV.

If th e video cables are dam aged, replace th em .  
Make sure th at th e player is con n ected to th e correct TV in put.  
Make sure th at th e video in put on th e TV is set to view th e DVD player.  
Make sure th at video is set to th e correct m ode. Press th e VIDEO OUT button  
on th e rem ote con trol un til a picture is visible.  
The picture on my TV has a lot of static, or “noise”  
Make sure th at th e DVD is n ot dirty or flawed.  
If th e picture output from your player goes th rough your VCR to get to  
your TV, th e copy-protection sign al used on som e DVDs could dim in ish  
th e picture quality. Try con n ectin g th e player directly to th e TV. If you still  
experien ce problem s, try con n ectin g your player to your TVs S-Video  
in put.  
The DVD picture does not fill the screen on my standard television.  
Ch an ge th e aspect ratio. For m ore in form ation , see To set th e aspect ratio:”  
on page 38.  
If th e picture does n ot ch an ge, th e DVDs aspect ratio m ay be fixed an d  
can n ot be adjusted.  
No sound plays while playing media through the player.  
Make sure th at all audio cables are securely plugged in .  
If an y audio or speaker cables are dam aged, replace th em .  
Make sure th at th e volum e is turn ed up on your TV.  
Make sure th at th e players audio settin gs m atch your TV an d audio system  
settin gs.  
Th e player m ay be in Pause, Slow Motion , or Forward/Reverse Scan m ode.  
Press PLAY on th e rem ote con trol to return to n orm al playback m ode.  
There is no surround effect during playback of Dolby Digital  
soundtrack.  
Make sure your audio cables are correctly con n ected. For m ore  
in form ation , see “Con n ectin g th e player” on page 15.  
Depen din g on th e DVD, th e audio output m ay n ot use all 5.1 ch an n els,  
but in stead output m on o or stereo soun d, even if th e soun dtrack is  
recorded in Dolby Digital form at.

I keep hearing a loud hum or noise.  
Make sure th at all com pon en ts in your audio system are securely  
plugged in .  
Make sure th at you keep your audio system s cables away from a  
tran sform er or m otor, an d th at you keep th em at least 10 feet away from  
a TV or fluorescen t ligh ts.  
Move your TV away from your audio com pon en ts.  
Th e plugs an d jacks m ay be dirty. Un plug th em , th en wipe th em clean with  
a cloth sligh tly m oisten ed with isopropyl alcoh ol.  
Clean th e DVD.  
The remote control does not work.  
Poin t th e rem ote con trol directly at th e sen sor on th e fron t of th e player.  
Rem ove an y obstacles between th e rem ote con trol an d th e player.  
Move closer to th e player wh en usin g th e rem ote con trol.  
Replace th e batteries.  
The DVD does not play.  
Make sure th at th ere is a DVD in th e tray.  
If th e DVD h as two playable sides, m ake sure th at th e side you wan t to  
play is facin g down in th e tray.  
Th e DVD m ay be warped an d un playable.  
Th e region code on th e DVD m ay n ot be Region 1.  
Moisture m ay h ave con den sed in side th e player. Rem ove th e DVD an d  
leave th e player turn ed on for about h alf an h our to dry th e con den sation .  
The DVD does not start playing from the beginning.  
Resum e Play is active. Press STOP twice, th en restart DVD playback.  
When I play a DVD, the voice audio is really quiet, but the music is  
really loud.  
Your player m ay be outputtin g a 5.1-ch an n el soun d sign al, wh ile you h ave
