Digital Tuning — gives you push-button con-

PREPARATION
INSTALLING BATTERIES
Your radio requires two AAA batteries (not
supplied) for power. For the best performance
and longest life, we recommend alkaline bat-
teries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-555.

1. To remove the battery compartment
cover, slide it in the direction of the arrow.
2. Insert the batteries into the compartment
as indicated by the polarity symbols (+
and –) marked inside.
Caution: Use only fresh batteries of the
required size and type.
3. Replace the cover.
Notes:
• If you wont be using the radio for a week
or more, remove the batteries.
• Replace the batteries when the radio’s
sound weakens or distorts.
Caution: Dispose of old batteries promptly
and properly.

USING EARPHONES

You can use 1/8-inch plug stereo earphones or
headphones (not supplied) to listen to your ra-
dio without disturbing others. To connect

Notes:
• Connecting earphones or headphones
disconnects the radio’s built-in speaker.
• While connected to the radio, the ear-
phones’ or headphones’ cord acts as the
FM antenna.
Listening Safely
To protect your hearing, follow these guide-
lines when you use earphones or head-
phones.
• Set the volume to the lowest setting
before you begin listening. After you
begin listening, adjust the volume to a
comfortable level.

• Do not listen at extremely high volume
levels. Extended high-volume listening
can lead to permanent hearing loss.
• Once you set the volume, do not
increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to
the volume level, so a volume level that
does not cause discomfort might still
damage your hearing.

Traffic Safety
Do not wear earphones or headphones while
operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle.
This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in
some areas.
Even though some earphones and head-
phones are designed to let you hear some out-
side sounds when listening at normal volume
levels, they still present a traffic hazard.

CONNECTING THE FM
ANTENNA

To receive FM stations (when you are not us-
ing earphones or headphones), you must con-
nect the supplied FM antenna. To connect the
FM antenna, insert its 1/8-inch plug into the ra-
dio’s
jack.

USING THE BELT-CLIP

To attach the belt-clip, insert its tabs into the
slots on the back of the radio, then slide the
clip toward the top of the radio until it locks in
place.
To remove the belt-clip, press firmly and slide
it toward the bottom of the radio.

To rapidly scan the stations, press and
hold TUNE

When you release it, the tuner automati-
cally stops at the next strong station.

For the best FM reception, fully uncoil

antenna’s cord.
The AM antenna is built-in. Move the
radio to improve AM reception.

5. Adjust VOLUME to a comfortable level.
6. Set MONO/STEREO to STEREO for stereo
sound or MONO for monaural sound.
Notes:

If MONO/STEREO is set to STEREO and
earphones/headphones are con-
nected, STEREO appears on the dis-
play when the radio receives an FM
broadcast in stereo.

The sound from the radio’s built-in
speaker is always monaural. To hear
the radio’s sound in stereo, you must
use earphones/headphones.
To improve reception of weak FM ste-
reo stations, set MONO/STEREO to
MONO. The sound is monaural, but the
reception should improve.

7. Set OFF/E-BASS (Extended Bass) to E-
BASS to emphasize the bass sound. Set
it back to OFF for normal bass sound.
8. Set OFF/ON to OFF to turn off the radio.
Changing the AM Band Step-Rate
Your radio’s AM band is preset to tune in 10
KHz increments — the standard step-rate for
radio frequencies in the United States. If you
travel to other countries where the step-rate is
9 KHz (Europe, for example), you can set your
radio to tune in that increment.
Follow these steps to change your radio’s AM
band step-rate.
1. Open the battery compartment and
remove the batteries.

2. Set the switch inside the compartment to
10K to tune the AM band in increments of
10 KHz, or set it 9K for increments of 9
KHz.

MEMORY stops flashing then disappears
from the display after about 5 seconds.
Notes:
• If MEMORY disappears before you press
a memory location button, start again
from Step 2.
• Repeat these steps to store a station in
each memory location.
• You cannot remove a station from mem-
ory, but you can store a new one in its
place.
• All memory stations are cleared when
battery power is disconnected for more
than 1 minute.

Recalling a Station in Memory
To recall a station stored in memory, simply
press the desired station’s memory location
button(s).
• For memory locations 1-5, press the cor-
responding memory location button (1-5).

• For memory locations 6-10, first press 5,
then press 1 for location six, 2 for location
seven, 3 for location eight, 4 for location
nine, or 5 for location ten.

USING LOCK
You can lock the tuning and memory controls
on your radio to prevent accidental band, sta-
tion, or memory changes.
To turn on the lock feature, simply set OFF/
LOCK to LOCK. To turn it off, set it back to OFF.

MAINTENANCE
• Keep the radio dry. If it gets wet, wipe it
dry immediately.
• Handle the radio gently and carefully.
Don’t drop it.
• Use and store the radio only in normal
temperature environments.
• Keep the radio away from dust and dirt.
• Wipe the radio with a damp cloth occa-
sionally to keep it looking new.
Modifying or tampering with the radio’s inter-
nal components can cause a malfunction and
might invalidate its warranty, and void your
FCC authorization to operate it. If your radio is
not performing as it should, take it to your local
Radio Shack store for assistance.

THE FCC WANTS YOU
TO KNOW
Your radio might cause TV or radio interfer-
ence even when it is operating properly. To
determine whether your radio is causing the
interference, turn off your radio. If the interfer-
ence goes away, your radio is causing the in-
terference. Try to eliminate the interference
by:
• Moving your radio away from the TV or
radio.
• Contacting your local Radio Shack store
for help.
If you cannot eliminate the interference, the
FCC requires that you stop using your radio.
