80 Hours of Programming
Extreme Levels of Quality
Here’s the amazing thing: because now you’re watching video
off the Hard Disc Drive, you can pause, rewind, or slow things
down so you never miss a moment. Hit the fast-forward
button during recorded programs to skip the parts you don't
want to see.
How much material will fit on an 80GB Hard Disc Drive or a
DVD? It depends upon the recording quality you select and
the type of programming. Here are the recording capacities
for each, by quality level:
Relax: once captured to the Hard Disc Drive, your programs
stay digital, with vastly superior detail, color accuracy, and
audio quality compared to videotape. To take it a step
farther, the DVR-810H-S provides an additional level of
recording quality, called "Extreme" (Fine), that is not offered
by even the best stand-alone DVR set-top boxes.

Picture this: you come home late, missing the first ten
minutes of a show you were looking forward to. With Chase
Play, you can back up and catch the beginning, while the
DVR-810H-S finishes recording to the end. You’ll never miss
your favorite shows again.
DCDI by Faroudja
When material originally shot on
video (as opposed to film) is
up-converted from standard definition
Medium (LP)
Basic (EP)
(480i) to enhanced definition quality
One Fast, Easy Drive
(480p), the process calls for some new video information to
be created. Overall, this “interpolation” greatly improves
picture quality, but during fast-paced programs such as pro
football and hockey it often causes unwanted jagged edges
(jaggies) along diagonal lines. The DVR-810H-S utilizes a
technique called “Directional Correlation De-Interlacing”, or
DCDI, a video mode algorithm that monitors edge
transitions and fills in any information gaps that cause the
jaggies. With DCDI, edges are smoother and more natural,
and the overall picture quality is improved.
It’s easy to record material from the Hard Disc Drive onto
DVD. The DVR-810H-S features up to 15x recording speed, so
you can dub a 2-hour program to DVD in Basic EP Quality
mode in less than 10 minutes. After using a S-L-O-W VCR for
so long, you’re going to love DVD recording. You can even
record content to the Hard Disc Drive while dubbing different
content from the Hard Disc Drive to a DVD! Plus, DVD
recordings are made in Video Mode, so your newly recorded
discs will play in most DVD players.
Burn It
Once you’ve stored TV shows and movies on your Hard Disc
Drive, you have lots of options. You can keep them on the
Hard Disc Drive for repeat viewing, or just watch them once
and delete them to free up space. Or, you can burn them
onto a DVD — either a DVD-R or DVD-RW — that you can
play on most players almost anywhere, even in your car or
on your laptop.
DVD-R or DVD-RW?
Favorite shows and one-of-a-kind home movies are good
examples of content you’d want to permanently archive onto
a DVD-R, so they can’t accidentally be erased. Or, use a
DVD-RW (content can be erased and re-written) to share
with friends and for temporary storage.
Digital 3D Noise Reduction
The DVR-810H-S includes a sophisticated noise reduction
circuit which can achieve an amazing 6-10dB of noise
reduction, without introducing artifacts or decreasing
sharpness. You’ll experience a much cleaner picture that is
virtually free of noise.

Don’t be fooled by the sleek, low-profile
design. These are powerful, next-generation
DVD Recorders that make editing, recording,
and playing DVDs easy. And fast. And fun.
Here’s how.
friends. And let’s say you don’t have the time
or the patience to do it on your home
computer.
even easier to create a home video
masterpiece. This Hard Disc Drive holds up to
102 hours of your favorite shows and home
movies, giving you lots of options: you can
store programs for as long as you like, and
watch them when you want. You can delete
them after viewing to free up disc space. Or
burn them to DVD and play them for rear-seat
passengers on the next long drive. Your choice.
A Pioneer DVD Recorder is the perfect way to
create your own home movie classics on
DVD. Basic editing in Video mode lets you
name, erase, lock, and unlock titles before
finalizing the disc. Want to re-name the title
showing baby’s first steps? Easy.
Advanced Disc Navigator
The user-friendly menu system makes all the
key functions really easy to operate. For
example, you can set up a Play List or move
a chapter with this menu. Want to find and
play a certain segment of your “My Kids”
DVD? Just select a thumbnail of that chapter
and it will begin to play.
The DV Cam-to-DVD Connection
In VR mode (using a DVD-RW disc) you can
do even more, such as erase part of a title or
make detailed changes to chapters in a title.
You can also set up a Play List — for
example, a title for each European city you
toured — which adds further editing
capabilities, such as moving the position of a
chapter, combining it with another, or dividing
it in two.
If your home movies were shot with a DV
camcorder — and you want to burn certain
parts to DVD but not others — here’s another
great feature that will save lots of time.
Just connect your camcorder’s DV input to
the bi-directional DV input on the DVR’s front
panel. Now, you can use the DVR’s remote to
control your camcorder’s functions (Forward,
Reverse, etc.) and easily find the scenes you
want to preserve to DVD. The DVR-520H-S
and DVR-320-S can control most brands of
DV camcorders, unlike many other DVD
recorders, which either don’t offer DV
Full-Motion Thumbnails with Sound
Yes, this menu’s thumbnail images are
actually shown in full motion, with sound!
These mini-movies make it much easier to
find what you’re looking for, and they make
your DVD recordings look really professional.
Think of a DVD with full-motion chapter
thumbnails from your daughter’s childhood or
your best friend’s wedding, and you can
envision what a powerful menu this would
make.
In Video mode you can finalize the disc and
then select a suitable wallpaper to appear
behind the disc’s menu during playback —
so when you show your DVD to friends and
family, it has a clean, professional look. And
you did it all without a computer!
connectivity at all or don’t allow camcorder
control via the DVD recorder.
Edit. Burn. Show Off. Repeat.
And if your movies were shot in analog format
rather than digital? You’re covered. Inputs for
composite/S-video and left and right audio
are provided for dubbing to DVD.
So, you have countless hours of home video
of your kids or a recent European vacation.
You want to organize your footage and record
it to DVD, so you can show it to family and

High-Speed, High-Quality Burning (DVR-520H-S)
the Hard Disc Drive is handling both Chase Play tasks. But
the DVR-320-S accomplishes Chase Play without a Hard
Disc Drive, using a memory buffer and recording directly to
standard DVD-RW discs (VR Mode)*.
Sophisticated Video Playback
They don’t call this “burning” for nothing. The DVR-520H-S
records from its Hard Disc Drive to DVD at very high speed.
An hour-long program recorded in Basic EP mode takes less
than 90 seconds when using 8x media. Yes, it’s that fast.
You can even watch other recorded content on the Hard
Disc Drive while backing up a DVD (high-speed copying).
The DVR-520H-S and DVR-320-S feature PureCinema 2:3
Progressive Scan for a more film-like presentation when
watching movies. A full set of connections is provided,
including a component video output for higher-quality signal
transfer to your TV. Both models offer a JPEG photo viewer
that’s compatible with Fuji and Kodak discs, and CD-R/RWs
burned from your computer.
* Only when using DVD-RW Ver. 1.1/2X (1 – 2X recording speed) and Ver.1.2/4X
(2 – 4X recording speed)
Smart VBR (Variable Bit Rate Recording)
This recording mode lets you choose the quality
level/recording time that best suits you. Choose from Fine,
SP, LP, EP, and Auto; Auto automatically sets the best
recording quality for the time remaining on the disc. Both
models have an improved VBR recording process for the
best possible video quality in any recording mode.
Disc Backup and Bit-for-Bit Recording (DVR-520H-S)
The DVR-520H-S also features Disc Backup, a Pioneer
exclusive. You can make a direct file transfer of your home-
movie DVD to the unit’s Hard Disc Drive, and from that
make as many copies of your original DVD as you want, all
at blazing speed. This is a great feature even for
Superior Audio. Of Course.
As with all Pioneer components, great audio comes built in.
Both models feature Dolby Digital and DTS Digital surround
sound outputs, along with high-quality audio and video D/A
converters.
videophiles who do their editing on their home computer
and burn their material to DVD. And unlike other Hard Disc
Drive-to-DVD recorders, it doesn’t recompress the video to
another format. It makes a perfect copy that is bit-for-bit
identical to the original, every time.

Virtual Liquid Crystal Tilt Mechanism
When recording to DVD, it’s critical to have a precisely
aimed laser beam. But sometimes imperfections in blank
DVD discs cause the laser to lose accuracy, and you can
get a less-than-perfect recording. Our new improved virtual
lens tilt mechanism featuring liquid-crystal technology
corrects for these imperfections, assuring the most
accurate recording possible.
DVD players and DVD discs have Regional Code classifications that determine their
market area and compatibility. Discs and players must have matching codes in
order to be played. All DVD players featured in this catalog are classified as
Regional Code 1.
Chase Play: Prime Time Starts Now
Let’s say that you set the timer to record your favorite
program, but end up getting home early, while it’s still
recording. And you want to see it right now, from the
beginning. Good news: you don’t need to wait until the
recording’s done. With Chase Play, you can watch the
program from the beginning as the rest of the program is
being recorded.
TV Recording with Built-in Tuner
TV shows and movies are among the most popular material
to record — which is why Pioneer’s DVD Recorders include
a built-in TV tuner. It’s easy to find and record your favorite
TV program: use either Pioneer’s timer record system with
its graphical interface and handy calendar, or the widely
used VCR Plus+®system.
With either model, Chase Play lets you watch, stop, or
pause a show that you’re recording. With the DVR-520H-S,

massive capacity allows it to reproduce ALL
of the music intended by the artist, without
the limitations of a normal CD. The warmth of
a DVD-A recording is reminiscent of the

of SACD audio that can be played on a regular
