B To avoid damaging Power cord, power plug and
AC adaptor, do not do any of the following:
Scratching / Modifying / Putting them near heater / Bending
/ Twisting / Pulling / Placing heavy objects on them /
Tying them in a bundle / Covering them with a cloth.
Using damaged Power cord, power plug and AC adaptor
may cause electric shock, short and fire.
For cord and plug repairing, contact a service office.
B Use only AC 120V. Make sure AC outlet or cords
for AC adaptor do not exceed the limit of their
electrical ratings.
Fire caused by overheating may result from connecting too
many cords to the same outlet.
B Periodically remove dust from prongs of AC
cord.
Accumulated dust on the plug may cause defective
installation and result in fire.
Wipe power plug with a dry cloth.
Remove power plug when drive is not in use for a
prolonged period.

B Unplug AC cord from outlet if any
of the following happen:
– It is damaged.
– Foreign objects get into it.
– It emits smoke or odor.
– It becomes excessively hot.
Because fire or electric shock may be caused
by continued use. If any of the above occur,
immediately turn off the Power Switch and
unplug AC cord from outlet.
B Do not touch metallic parts of drive,
AC adaptor or AC cord when there is lightning.
It may cause electric shock.
B Do not move drive when AC cord is connected
to AC outlet.
AC cord may be damaged and it may cause fire or electric
shock.
If AC cord is damaged, unplug AC cord from outlet
immediately, then contact a service office.
B Disconnect AC cord from AC outlet by pulling on
the plug.
Pulling AC cord may cause damage to the cord itself, and
then it may cause fire or electric shock.

Location
I Do not place drive where it will be exposed to direct sunlight or where the
temperature will become excessively high.
It may cause deformations, discoloration or breakdown.
Usage
I Do not use other USB cables
except for the supplied one.
It may cause a drive or computer
breakdown.
I Do not bring magnets or magnetic
objects near drive. (Operation may
become unstable due to the effects
of the magnetism.)
I Do not place drive where it is
extremely dusty or filled with
greasy fumes, or it is humid, e.g.
near a humidifier or in the kitchen.
It may cause a breakdown.
I Do not insert metal objects into
drive.
It will cause a breakdown.
I Do not touch lens.
It will cause an audio skip or failure
of data reading and writing.
I If drive is used near a radio or TV
set and it causes interference with
reception, place drive at least 6'6"
(2 meters) away from the radio or
TV set, and if sharing AC outlet
with them, use another AC outlet.
I Do not use drive when
condensation has formed in or on
it. (When drive is suddenly taken
from a cold place to a warm place,
condensation will form, causing
drive to malfunction. In such cases,
remove the disc and leave drive for
about an hour before use.)
Transport
I When you carry the drive, remove the disc, close the Disc Cover and
remove the cable.
I Do not drop the drive or bump it into objects when moving or transporting it.
AC Adaptor
I Use only AC adaptor KX-WZ712 and Power cord supplied with drive.
Using other AC adaptors and Power cords may cause a breakdown.

data to protect it from possible loss.
For Copy Control CD (copy protected CD)
I When using CDs that do not conform to the CD-DA (Compact Disc Digital
Audio) standards, such as “Copy Control CDs”, the performance and sound
quality is not guaranteed.
I If the drive can play back or read CDs that conform to the CD standards
without a problem, but cannot play back or read a special disc like the Copy
Control CD above, check the disc, package, pamphlet etc. and contact the
disc manufacturer.
Observance of copyright
Enjoy your image and audio recordings and other data for personal use.
Other unauthorized use is prohibited under copyright law.
Discs Recorded with Panasonic DVD Video Recorder
BTo play back DVD-RAMs recorded with DVD video recorders, UDF Reader
compatible with UDF2.0 format is required.
For Windows OSs other than Windows XP, install the supplied UDF Reader.
(For Windows XP, UDF installation is not required.)
BTo play back a DVD-R recorded with a DVD video recorder, it is necessary
to finalize the DVD-R using the DVD video recorder used for recording.

Handling Discs
Data may not be written correctly or data that has already been written may be damaged if
these discs are not handled correctly. Incorrect handling may also damage your drive.
Read carefully these instructions and the instructions that came with the disc you are using.

I Avoid direct sunlight, high
temperature and humidity.
Disc may be damaged or become
deformed, and data cannot be written or
read properly.
I Do not write or adhere labels on
the disc except for on the label

scratches on the recording

I Do not use benzine, paint

the recording surface of discs can affect
the reading and writing of data.

DVD-RAM variations
DVD-RAM is a removable disc developed as a “DVD to which data can be
written”, aiming at reading and writing large computer data.
There are the following types of DVD-RAMs.
B TYPE1
The disc inside cannot be removed.
B TYPE2
A “single sided” disc. The disc inside can be removed.
B TYPE4
A “double sided” disc. The disc inside can be removed.
B Non-cartridge type
This drive is only compatible with non-cartridge type DVD-RAMs.
To use TYPE2 or TYPE4 DVD-RAMs, remove the discs from cartridges.

Removing a Disc from a Cartridge
To remove a disc from a cartridge, follow the procedure shown below.
[The discs illustrated below are Panasonic 12 cm DVD-RAMs. When using
other discs, refer to instructions supplied with discs.]

The following software programs are included on the CD-ROM supplied with this
drive.
It is necessary to install the driver software to use this drive.
Driver Software
Install the following driver software first.
1. USB Driver
This is a device driver for Windows 98SE / Windows Me. If you use
Windows 98SE / Windows Me, it is necessary to install this driver first.
BInstall the USB Driver from the CD-ROM.
Notes:

For Windows Me, this drive can be operated with the OS standard USB
driver, but it is possible that malfunctions will occur. We recommend you
install the USB Driver supplied with this drive.
BFor Windows 98SE, use a working drive for installation other than this
drive.
2. UDF Reader
UDF Reader is driver software for reading DVD-RAMs in UDF 2.0 format.
(DVD-RAMs recorded with a DVD video recorder are formatted in UDF 2.0.)
UDF Reader installation is required for Windows OSs other than Windows XP.
BInstall the UDF Reader from the CD-ROM.

Check the Windows OS version of your computer.
Windows XP
From Task Bar, click [start] then right-click [My Computer] and click
[Properties]. [System Properties] window appears on the screen.
Windows 2000 / Windows Me / Windows 98SE
Right-click [My Computer] icon on the screen, then click
[Properties]. [System Properties] window appears on the screen.
Confirm at the System Properties Window that “Microsoft Windows XP”,
“Microsoft Windows 2000”, “Microsoft Windows Me” or “Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition”
is installed.

Confirmation of USB Type
If the computer is not compatible with USB2.0 and you use this drive connected
to a USB port of the computer, this drive can only deliver USB1.1 performance. If
you want USB 2.0 performance, it is necessary to purchase a USB2.0 interface
card (see p.61).
Refer to the computer manual to check which USB standard applies.
I Using USB1.1
If you use Windows 98SE / Windows Me, the USB Driver included on the
CD-ROM must be installed. Go to “Installing USB Driver” on p.24.
* If you use a Windows OS other than Windows 98SE / Windows Me, the USB
Driver installation is not required.
Windows XP / Windows 2000
USB Driver installation is not required.
Drive runs with standard USB driver included in OS.
Go to “Installing UDF Reader” on p. 27.
Windows 98SE / Windows Me
For Windows Me, this drive can be operated with the OS standard
USB driver, but it is possible that malfunctions will occur. We recommend
you install the USB Driver supplied with this drive.
Install the supplied USB Driver.

Notes:
When the drive is connected with USB 1.1:
BWriting and reading speeds are about 8X at maximum.
BWhen playing a DVD-Video, frame-drops or block-noises may occur.
We recommend you use USB2.0 for writing to CD-R at 8X or higher,
re-writing to CD-RW and playing back DVD-Video.

When computer compatible with USB2.0 is used

The USB Driver supplied with this drive is not required.
(If Windows XP Service Pack 1 has not been installed, download using
Windows Update.)
Go to “Connecting USB Cable” on p.30.
BWindows 2000
After downloading updates from Windows Update, go to
“Installing UDF Reader” on p.27.
When computer that is not compatible with USB2.0 is used
Connect a USB2.0 interface card to the computer, then install a USB driver
appropriate to the OS on your computer. (Check the interface card
manufacturer’s home page for the latest information.)
BWindows XP
USB driver is available from Microsoft Windows Update.
Download Service Pack 1.
Go to “Connecting USB Cable” on p.30.
BWindows 2000
USB driver update is available from Microsoft Windows Update.

To read DVD-RAMs in UDF 2.0 format, a UDF reader compatible with UDF 2.0
format is required.

cartridge type can be used with this drive.

When You Cannot Remove the Disc

If the Disc Cover will not open due to the failures occurred while writing data
to a disc or during power-down, or when the drive is not turned on, the Disc
Cover lock can be released manually to open the Disc Cover.

Using DVD-RAMs
This drive is only compatible with non-cartridge type DVD-RAMs.
To use TYPE2 or TYPE4 DVD-RAMs, remove the discs from cartridges.
Caution:
BTake care not to contaminate the recording surface with fingerprints, dirt,
dust and scratches. Do not drop or bend discs, or adhere labels on the
recording surface.
Notes:
BIt may differ how to remove the discs from cartridges according to the disc
manufacturer. Read the disc’s handling instructions carefully.
BFor DVD-RAMs, a disc occasionally may take some time to be recognized.
When it happens, remove the disc once, then insert it into the drive again.
Disc conditions (dirt or scratches on the recording surface, or bad writing
quality) may affect reading and writing.
DVD-RAMs Recorded with DVD Video Recorder
“DVD_RTAV” folder is created on the DVD-RAM recorded with a DVD video
recorder or a DVD camcorder conforming to the “Video Recording standards”,
or with recording software program such as DVD-MovieAlbumSE 3
conforming to the same standard.
Do not access this folder or files in this folder on the computer. Some files in
this folder exceed 2 GB. Due to the limit of Windows 98SE specifications, the
files that exceed 2 GB may not be copied or the capacity of the disc may not be
displayed correctly.
Also if this folder or files are deleted or modified, the disc cannot be played
back with a DVD video recorder or a recording software program on the
computer.

Using Other Discs
I CD-Rs
Using B’s Recorder GOLD5 BASIC (see p.42), data CDs and Audio CDs can
be created.
(Writing to CD-R with B’s CLiP5 is not supported on this drive.)
I CD-RWs
After formatting a CD-RW with B’s CLiP5 format function (p.42), data in files
can be written to the disc just like floppy disk. Also data CDs and Audio CDs
can be created using B’s Recorder GOLD5 BASIC.
I DVD-Videos
DVD-Videos and Video CDs can be played back using WinDVD 4 (see p.39).
I DVD-ROMs / CD-ROMs
For usage of DVDs/CD-ROMs, refer to the manuals supplied with DVD/CD-
ROM applications or Readme files.
I Audio CDs
To play back Audio CDs using this drive, it is necessary to enable Digital
Playback on the computer. When Digital Playback is enabled, you can listen
to the music from the speakers connected to the computer. (For details, refer
to the computer instruction manual.)

Playback starts automatically after inserting a DVD-Video into the drive (when Auto

I Region Code
Many DVD-Videos (DVDs) are protected by a Region Code.
Region Codes are administered separately for each region shown below.
To watch a DVD-Video, the following Region Codes must be consistent with
each other.

When attempting to play back a DVD-Video with a different Region Code, a
warning window appears. Click [OK]. Region Code setting window will appear.
Check the setting and click [OK]. Playback software (WinDVD 4) and this
drive will be set to a new Region Code. After checking the setting changes
and closing the window, playback will start.
The factory preset is Region Code 1.
Region Code can be set up to 5 times. However, the factory preset is
counted as the first time, so Region Code can be reset 4 more times at
most.
Note:
BBe aware that when the Region Code has been reset for the fourth time,
the setting is fixed and cannot be changed.
Users take responsibility for any problems caused by resetting the Region
Code improperly.

I B’s Recorder GOLD5 BASIC / B’s CLiP5
BHA B’s Recorder GOLD5 BASIC and B’s CLiP5 are included on the
CD-ROM supplied with this drive. Install them from the CD-ROM. For
installation and handling, refer to B’s Recorder GOLD5 BASIC and
B’s CLiP5 PDF manuals included on the CD-ROM supplied with this drive.
Using this drive, data cannot be written to or erased from DVD media.
BWriting Software (B’s Recorder GOLD5 BASIC)
This multi-function writing software allows you to create your own data CDs
and DVDs, and Audio CDs.
BPacket Writing Software (B’s CLiP5)
This writing software allows you to write the files to CD-RW just like writing
to floppy disk.
Cautions:
BIf an earlier version of the same application or another company’s software
program that is equivalent to the supplied one is already installed in the
computer, uninstall them before installing the application supplied with this
drive. Co-existence of B’s CLiP5 with other companies’ packet writing
software or UDF reader in the same computer environment may cause
problems.
BInstall the writing software after USB Driver and UDF Reader installation are
complete (p.24, 27).
BFor Windows XP, disable Windows XP standard writing function when using
B’s CLiP5.

How to Make the CB30A Driver Installation Floppy Disk
USB Driver (included on the supplied CD-ROM)
It is necessary to install USB device driver first when your computer is used
Windows 98SE.
This USB Driver is designed for your drive to be installed on windows 98SE only.
Install this USB Driver from supplied CD-ROM or a floppy disk which you may
create yourself as follows.
Note:
BIt is not necessary to install the USB Driver unless you use Windows 98SE.
When you make the installation floppy disk, a formatted floppy disk, floppy
disk drive and another CD-ROM drive are required.

SmoothLink function setting in writing software and
the following:
BDisable suspend and resum functions.

If SmoothLink function is OFF, writing data to media
may fail due to interruption during data transmission
from the computer.
To avoid:
BChange writing speed (to a lower speed).
Before actually writing to the media, execute
“Simulate” using the writing software.
Available working speed may change depending

Basic Input Output System. The BIOS is a fundamental part
of the software that controls the floppy disk drive, hard disk
drive, keyboard and other hardware. It is normally
preinstalled.

Buffer Under Run occurs when drive’s buffer memory
becomes empty for an instant while writing to a disc.
Buffer Under Run Error Writing becomes interrupted and writing error occurs.
In addition to Audio data, CD-EXTRA also has CD-ROM
data. Audio data is stored on the inner tracks and CD-ROM
data on the outer tracks.
It bears one of the following logos.
CD-EXTRA
Compact Disc Recordable. Once data is written to it, the
data cannot be erased or rewritten. Depending on the
writing mode, it may be possible to write additional data in
CD-R
available disc space afterwards.
Compact Disc ReWritable. Data written to a CD-RW can be

deleted, either in its entirety or for the last session.
CD-RWs are rewritable.
Records all the data selected onto a single disc at one time.

Digital Versatile Disc. A DVD is the same size as a CD, but

movies and home videos have this specification. It is

LIMITED WARRANTY
PANASONIC Drive
Panasonic Digital Document Company will either repair this product with new or comparable, reconditioned parts,
or exchange this product with a new or comparable rebuilt, reconditioned or reclaimed unit free of charge in the
U.S.A. In the event of a defect materials or workmanship as follows:
A. For twelve (12) months from the date of purchase, as established by the purchase receipt or other proof of
purchase.
OR
B. For fifteen (15) months from the date of manufacture, as on the serial number label on the unit.
Whichever comes last.
SERVICE
Carry-in or mail-in service can be obtained during the warranty period. For instructions on how to obtain service
on this product, call the Panasonic Hotline at 1-800-PANASYS. Be sure that all shipping costs are prepaid and
that the package is adequately insured before sending the unit to the Panasonic Repair Center. Return Shipping
costs will be paid by Panasonic Digital Document Company Unit of Matsushita Electric Corporation of America.
This warranty is extended only to the original purchaser. A purchase receipt or other proof of date of original
purchase will be required before warranty performance is rendered.
This warranty only covers failures due to defects in materials or workmanship which occur during normal use. It
does not cover failures due to damage which occurs in shipment or failures which are caused by products
(including software) not supplied by Panasonic Digital Document Company or failures which result from accident,
misuse, abuse neglect, mishandling misapplication, alteration, faulty installation, modification or service by
anyone other than a factory service center or damage that is attributable to lightening, line voltage variations, or
acts of God.
There are no express warranties except as listed above.
INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES RESULTING FROM THE USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE
THIS PRODUCT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES RESULTING FROM USE OF THIS PRODUCT, OR
ARISING OUT OF ANY BREACH OF THIS WARRANTY, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION. LOSS OF
STORED DATA.
DURATION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, IF ANY, IS LIMITED TO 90 DAYS.
Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, or limitations on how
long an implied warranty lasts, so the above exclusions or limitations may not apply to you.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.
If a problem with your Panasonic product develops during the warranty period, first contact your Panasonic dealer
or Panasonic Digital Document Company listed on other side. If the problem is not handled to your satisfaction,
then write to the Service Administration Manager, Panasonic Digital Document Company Unit of Matsushita

Complete and immediately mail the Product Analysis Card. We ask that you complete the

1. The US Center for Devices and Radiological Health requires that Panasonic keep a record of
installation of all installed optical laser equipment that can be supplied to them upon demand.

Carefully pack and send it prepaid, adequately insured and preferably in the original carton. Attach

Do not send the product to the Executive or other Panasonic locations. They are NOT equipped to
make repairs.
