Hardware Overview of the Modem Router
1
The NETGEAR® Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi VDSL/ADSL Modem Router Model D7000, in this manual referred
to as the modem router, delivers combined WiFi connection speeds of up to AC1900 WiFi (600 Mbps1 on 2.4
GHz2 802.11n and 1300 Mbps3 on 5 GHz 802.11ac). Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios can be active
simultaneously.
The modem router provides fast central storage, backup, and streaming to every device in your home with
the USB 3.0 port (10 times faster than USB 2.0). Sharing content across your network is easy, from accessing
stored photos and music to wirelessly printing. Stream your stored media files anywhere on the network to
DLNA screens. Share your music to Airplay-compatible devices from the USB hard-drive connected to the
router. Use the free NETGEAR ReadySHARE Vault app to back up your Windows computers to a USB hard
drive connected to Nighthawk.
The modem router is compatible with most major DSL Internet service providers and also supports cable or
fiber Internet service.

Note In this manual, the terms wireless and WiFi are interchangeable.
1. Maximum wireless signal rate derived from IEEE standard 802.11 specifications. Actual data throughput and wireless coverage will vary.
Network conditions and environmental factors, including volume of network traffic, building materials and construction, and network overhead,
lower actual data throughput rate and wireless coverage. NETGEAR makes no express or implied representations or warranties about this
product’s compatibility with any future standards. 802.11ac 1300 Mbps is approximately 3x faster than 802.11n 450 Mbps.
2. The 2.4 GHz performance mode requires 256 QAM support on the WiFi client.
3. Up to 1300 Mbps wireless speeds can be achieved when you are connecting to other 802.11ac 1300 Mbps devices.

PositionYour Modem Router
The modem router lets you access your network anywhere within the operating range of your WiFi network.
However, the operating distance or range of your WiFi connection can vary significantly depending on
the physical placement of your modem router. For example, the thickness and number of walls the WiFi
signal passes through can limit the range.
Additionally, other WiFi access points in and around your home might affect your modem router’s signal.
WiFi access points are routers, repeaters, WiFi range extenders, and any other device that emits a WiFi
signal for network access.
Position your modem router according to the following guidelines:
•
•
•
•
Place your modem router near the center of the area where your computers and other devices operate
and within line of sight to your WiFi devices.
Make sure that the modem router is within reach of an AC power outlet and near Ethernet cables for
wired computers.
Place the modem router in an elevated location, minimizing the number walls and ceilings between
the modem router and your other devices.
Place the modem router away from electrical devices such as these:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Ceiling fans
Home security systems
Microwaves
Computers
Base of a cordless phone
2.4 GHz cordless phone
•
Place the modem router away from large metal surfaces, large glass surfaces, insulated walls, and
items such as these:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Solid metal door
Aluminum studs
Fish tanks
Mirrors
Brick
Concrete
If you are using adjacent access points, use different radio frequency channels to reduce interference.
Connect to the Modem Router
During and after installation, you can connect to the modem router’s network through a wired or WiFi
connection. If you set up your computer to use a static IP address, change the settings of your computer
so that it uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
