Chapter 1: Introduction  
Welcome  
Thank you for choosing the Wireless-G Presentation Player. This Presentation Player will allow you to play your  
presentations wirelessly better than ever.  
The versatile Linksys Wireless-G Presentation Player is the ultimate presentation tool. In the conference room, it  
can act as a 54Mbps access point to your network, and also connects via a standard VGA connector to your  
projector or monitor. Any wireless-equipped computer within range (and with permission) can take control of the  
Player and project live screen images of any application running on the PC. Give presentations, review the  
numbers in your spreadsheets, and collaboratively edit documents at up to 1024x768 resolution and 24-bit color.  
For truly interactive meetings and brainstorming sessions, the Player allows any member of the wired or wireless  
network group to take instant control of the projector, with no cable-swapping hassle. Go around the room for  
status reports, or let the inspiration flow in an ad-hoc idea exchange. In a classroom setting, the Player allows a  
teacher to unobtrusively supervise each students' progress without physically peeking over their shoulders.  
The Wireless-G Presentation Player can also act as a stand-alone presentation device. Using the included utility,  
upload your PowerPoint® presentations directly into the Player's 32 megabyte non-volatile memory or to your  
own USB Memory Disk. Then leave your PC at home! Take the Player to the boardroom or your customer's site,  
plug it into a projector or monitor, and run your presentation directly from the Player using the included infrared  
wireless remote. It even includes a built-in laser pointer to help you hit the highlights.  
As a wireless interactive meeting facilitator or as a stand-alone presentation tool, the Linksys Wireless-G

Network Topology  
A wireless network is a group of computers, each equipped with one wireless adapter. Computers in a wireless  
network must be configured to share the same radio channel. Several PCs equipped with wireless cards or  
adapters can communicate with one another to form an ad-hoc network.  
ad-hoc: a group of wireless devices  
communicating directly with each other (peer-  
to-peer) without the use of an access point.  
Linksys wireless adapters also provide users access to a wired network when using an access point or wireless  
router. An integrated wireless and wired network is called an infrastructure network. Each wireless PC in an  
infrastructure network can talk to any computer in a wired network infrastructure via the access point or wireless  
router.

an access point.  
An infrastructure configuration extends the accessibility of a wireless PC to a wired network, and can double the  
effective wireless transmission range for two wireless adapter PCs. Since an access point is able to forward data  
within a network, the effective transmission range in an infrastructure network can be doubled.  
Roaming  
Infrastructure mode also supports roaming capabilities for mobile users. Roaming means that you can move your  
wireless PC within your network and the access points will pick up the wireless PC's signal, providing that they  
both share the same channel and SSID.  
Before enabling you consider roaming, choose a feasible radio channel and optimum access point position.  
Proper access point positioning combined with a clear radio signal will greatly enhance performance.

Linksys wireless access points and wireless routers have been designed for use with 802.11a, 802.11b, and  
802.11g products. With 802.11g products communicating with the 802.11b standard and some products  
incorporating both “a” and “g”, products using these standards can communicate with each other.  
Access points and wireless routers are compatible with 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g adapters, such at the PC  
Cards for your laptop computers, PCI Card for your desktop PC, and USB Adapters for when you want to enjoy  
USB connectivity. Wireless products will also communicate with the wireless PrintServer.  
When you wish to connect your wired network with your wireless network, network ports on access points and  
wireless routers can be connected to any of Linksys's switches or routers.

Chapter 3: Getting to Know the Presentation Player  
Overview  
This chapter describes what is on the back and front panels of the Presentation Player, and the remote control.  
The Back Panel  
The Presentation Player's ports, where a network cable is connected, and the reset button are located on the  
back panel. See Figure 3-1.  
USB  
The USB port is where you will connect the USB memory disk device.  
Monitor/Projector The Monitor/Projector port is where you will connect the VGA cable from the monitor or  
projector where your presentation will be displayed.  
LAN  
This LAN (Local Area Network) port connects to Ethernet network devices, such as a  
switch or router.  
Power  
The Power port is where you will connect the power adapter.  
Reset Button  
There are two ways to reset the Presentation Player's factory defaults. Either press the  
Reset Button, for approximately ten seconds, or restore the defaults from the  
Administration tab in the Presentation Player's Web-based Utility.  
With these, and many other, Linksys products, your networking options are limitless. Go to the Linksys website at  
Important: Resetting the Presentation Player will erase  
all of your settings (WEP Encryption, Wireless and LAN  
settings, etc.) and replace them with the factory default  
settings. Do not reset the Presentation Player if you want  
to retain these settings.

The Front Panel  
The Presentation Player's LEDs, where information about network activity is displayed, the infrared sensor, and  
the power switch are located on the front panel.

Green. The Power LED lights up when the Presentation Player is powered on.

Green. The Wireless-G LED lights whenever there is a successful wireless connection. If the

Green. The LAN LED serves two purposes. If the LED is continuously lit, the Presentation Player  
is successfully connected to a device through the LAN port. If the LED is flickering, it is an  
indication of any network activity.  
Green. The USB LED lights whenever there is a successful USB connection.  
Infrared  
The infrared sensor is where you point the remote control of the Presentation Player.  
Power Switch The Power Switch is where you will turn the Presentation Player on and off.

2. Make sure that the Presentation Player is turned off. Plug the supplied power adapter into the Power port on  
the Presentation Player’s back panel. Then, plug the other end into a power outlet (surge protection  
recommended). Turn on the Presentation Player.  
IMPORTANT: Make sure to only use the power adapter that is supplied with  
the Presentation Player. Use of a different adapter can damage the product.

3. To have a wired connection, connect one end of the Category 5 Ethernet network cable to your PC’s Ethernet  
adapter. Connect the other end to the Ethernet port on the back of the Presentation Player.  
4. For a wireless connection, fix the direction of the antenna. Place the antenna perpendicular to the ground.  
5. Place the Player near the monitor or projector facing the presenters so that the infra red in the remote control  
will be in line of sight to the Player.

Placement Options  
There are two ways to place the Player. You can place the Player horizontally on a surface, as shown in Figure 6-  
1. (If necessary, adjust the antenna so that it points straight up in the air.) The second way is to stand the Player  
vertically on a surface. If you want to install the stand, refer to the instructions below.  
Installing the Stand for Vertical Placement  
1. The Player includes four triangular stands. The Player has eight rubber inserts, four on each side.  
2. Remove the two rubber inserts that are adjacent to the power port. Insert a stand into an opening, then push  
it up to snap it into place. Then, insert a stand into the other opening, and push it up to snap it into place.

3. Repeat step 2 for the LED side of the Player.  
4. Place the Player in an appropriate location.  
5. If necessary, adjust the antenna so that it points straight up in the air. (See Figure 6-2.)

Chapter 5: Setting up the Presentation Player  
Installation  
The Presentation Player can play from any PC in your wireless network, but you will first need to install this utility  
in each PC that will be used with the Presentation Player – once installed, it will not need to be done again.  
1. Insert the Setup CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The CD’s Wizard should start automatically and the  
Welcome page for the Setup Utility will appear (as shown in Figure 5-1).  
If it does not start automatically, click the Start button, select Run, and enter d:\setup.exe (where “d” is the  
letter of your CD-ROM drive) in the Open field to start the autorun program.  
On the Welcome page, click the Setup tab to start the installation procedure and place the Control Utility on  
your current PC.  
Click the User Guide tab to use this User Guide. Click the Exit tab to close the Setup Utility.  
2. A screen like that shown in Figure 5-2 will appear.

Read the license agreement and click the Yes tab to accept the terms and continue the installation procedure.  
If you click No, you will end the installation procedure.

3. The next screen, like that shown in Figure 5-3, will allow you to choose where the Setup Utility will install the  
Control Utility and the Presentation Converter. By default, the destination folder is C:\Program  
Files\Linksys\Wireless-G Presentation Player.  
If you want to change the location, click the Browse tab and select another destination for the installation.  
Click the Next tab to continue. Click the Back button to return to the previous screen. Click the Exit tab if you  
want to end the Setup Utility.  
4. The wizard will now be ready to begin copying the program files. Review the screen shown in Figure 5-4.  
Click the Exit tab if you want to end the Setup Utility.

5. When you see this screen, the installation of the Setup Utility onto your computer has been completed.  
Click the Exit tab to exit the Setup Utility now or click the Online Registration tab to register your product  
online.

Chapter 6: Configuring the Presentation Player with the  
Web-Based Utility  
Overview  
The Presentation Player has been designed to function with the default settings in the Setup Utility. However, if  
you’d like to change these settings, the Presentation Player can be configured through your web browser with the  
Web-Based Utility. This chapter explains how to configure the Presentation Player. The Utility contains these four  
tabs: Setup, administration, Status, and Help.  
How to Access the Web-based Utility  
To access the Web-based Utility, you will need the Presentation Player’s IP Address. To find the Player’s IP

Address, make sure that the Presentation Player is connected to the projector or monitor and that both devices  
are powered on. Open your web browser and enter the Player’s IP Address in the Address field. The default IP  
Address is 192.168.1.200. Press the Enter key.  
Note: The Presentation Player is designed to function  
properly after using the Setup Wizard. This chapter is  
provided for those who wish to perform more  
advanced configuration or monitoring.  
A password request screen, shown in Figure 6-1, will appear. The first time you open the Web-Based Utility, enter  
the default password admin into the Password field. Click the OK button. You can later set a new password  
using the Administration tab, as shown in Figure 6-4.  
The Setup Tab  
The Setup tab, as shown in Figure 6-2, has your available basic setup functions. Most users can use the default  
settings, but you can change them here if you want. Your network and wireless security functions are located  
here.  
firmware: the programming code that runs a  
networking device  
Firmware Version - This field displays the current firmware version of the Presentation Player. Firmware  
upgrades, when available, may be downloaded from the Linksys web site at no charge. If you are not  
experiencing any problems with the Presentation Player, you should not upgrade the firmware. Make sure to  
review the release notes of any firmware version before attempting an upgrade.  
MAC (Media Access Control) Address:the  
unique address that a manufacturer assigns to  
each networking device  
Player Name - This is a common name that you assign to the Presentation Player. This field is limited to 32  
characters. By default, four alphanumeric characters follow the device name. These represent the last four  
characters of the Presentation Player's MAC (Ethernet) address. The MAC address is printed on the bottom of the

Presentation Player. Assigning unique and memorable names is helpful, especially if you are using multiple  
Presentation devices on the same network.  
Network Settings  
MAC Address. The MAC Address of the wired (LAN) network is displayed.  
IP Address Settings. This is the Internet Protocol Address that is assigned to the Presentation Player. Click  
Obtain an IP Address Automatically or Set Static IP Manually. Choose Obtain an IP Address Automatically  
to allow your Presentation Player to automatically obtain a dynamic IP address from a DHCP server. Or,  
choose Set Static IP Manually where you will assign all the devices a permanent IP Address and enter the  
fixed IP address in the fields provided. Then, enter the Subnet Mask into the fields provided. No DHCP  
changes will take effect until the Presentation Player has been powered down and powered up again. The IP  
Address will only be used to remotely configure or control the Presentation Player. You do not need to  
reconfigure it if you are traveling to remote locations and plan to use the hand-held remote control.

DHCP Server Settings. If you are using a DHCP server, select Enabled from the drop-down menu. Enter the  
Start IP Address in the field. Then, enter the number of users in the field. The IP Address range will be  
displayed.

Wireless Settings  
MAC Address.The MAC Address of the wireless network is displayed.  
Mode. Choose your network mode from the drop-down menu. Select Wireless-G, Wireless-B, or Mixed.  
SSID. This stands for Service Set IDentifier. The SSID, also called the Network Name, is a unique name that  
identifies a wireless network. In order to connect to the Presentation Player, all of your wireless computer's  
settings must be identical to the SSID you define here. The SSID is case sensitive, must not exceed 30  
characters, including WPG54G-, but may consist of any keyboard character. Make sure that this setting is the  
same for all wireless devices communicating with the Presentation Player. You should change the default  
SSID of "linksys" to a name that is unique to your network.  
Channel. Each Access Point and/or Presentation Player on your network should be assigned a unique channel.  
The channel is a common number that sets the actual frequency this particular device will use to  
communicate with wireless clients. For example, TV and Radio Stations refer to particular channels, which  
are actually frequencies at which radio waves are transmitted.  
If you experience poor performance, you may have interference from another wireless device. Changing the  
channel may eliminate interference and increase performance. Channels 1, 6 and 11 are preferred.

WEP Encryption. Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is an encryption method used to protect your wireless  
communications and prevent unauthorized access to the Presentation Player and/or your network.  
WEP uses 64-bit or 128-bit keys to provide access control to your network and encryption security for every  
data transmission. To decode data transmissions, all devices in a network must use an identical WEP key.  
Higher encryption levels offer higher levels of security, but due to the complexity of the encryption, they may  
decrease network performance. To enable WEP encryption, click the Enabled radio button. Then click the  
WEP Key Setting button to configure the WEP settings. To disable WEP encryption, keep the default setting,  
Disabled.  
Default Transmit Key. Select which WEP key (1-4) will be used when the Router sends data. Make sure the  
receiving device is using the same key.  
WEP Encryption. Select the level of WEP encryption you wish to use, 64-bit 10 hex digits or 128-bit 26 hex  
digits.  
Passphrase. Instead of manually entering WEP keys, you can enter a Passphrase. This Passphrase is used to  
generate one or more WEP keys. It is case-sensitive and should not be longer than 16 alphanumeric  
characters. (This Passphrase function is compatible with Linksys wireless products only. If you want to  
communicate with non-Linksys wireless products, enter the WEP key manually on the non-Linksys wireless  
products.) After you enter the Passphrase, click the Generate button to create WEP keys.

Keys 1-4. WEP keys enable you to create an encryption scheme for wireless network transmissions. If you are  
not using a Passphrase, then manually enter a set of values. (Do not leave a key field blank, and do not enter  
all zeros, because they are invalid key values.)  
If you are using 64-bit WEP encryption, then the key must be exactly 10 hexadecimal characters in length. If  
you are using 128-bit WEP encryption, then the key must be exactly 26 hexadecimal characters in length.  
Valid hexadecimal characters are “0”-“9” and “A”-“F”.  
When finished making your changes on this tab, click the Save Settings button to save these changes, or click  
the Cancel Changes button to undo your changes.

The Administration tab, as shown in Figure 6-4, is where you change your password, restore the factory default  
settings, and upgrade the firmware for the Presentation Player.  
Player Password  
Choose an alphnumeric password between 4 and 16 characters and without spaces. Enter the password into the  
Password field, then repeat it in the Re-type Password field.  
Restore Factory Defaults  
If you need to clear all of the settings on the Presentation Player and restore them to the factory default settings,  
click the Yes button. Then, click the Apply button.

The control utility may be used from any wired or wireless notebook or desktop PC with a connection to the  
Wireless Presentation Player. It is a good idea to place the Wireless Presentation Player on or near the monitor or  
projection area. The Infrared sensor is located on the front panel of the unit and the remote control must be in  
line-of-sight of the sensor in order to function properly.  
Make sure that the Presentation Player is connected to the projector or monitor and that both devices are  
powered on. Click on the WPG54G Presentation Player icon on your desktop. (See Figure 7-1.)  
1. The welcome screen will appear first. (See Figure 7-2.) Click Next to continue.  
2. On the next screen, select the Presentation Player from the drop-down list. The Players are listed with the last  
four digits of their MAC Address. You may change the name of the Player on the Setup tab in the Web-based  
Utility in Chapter 6: Configuring the Presentation Player Using the Web-based Utility. Click Next to continue.

3. When you see the screen shown in Figure 7-4, you will choose a color setting for your presentation. Select the  
default True Color to have the optimum color option. If the action is very slow or your presentation is mostly  
text, you may want to select Basic Color. You will still have color, but your speed will increase.  
Click the Refresh button.  
4. Next, choose your presentation option from the following buttons at the bottom of the screen.  
Upload Presentation. This option allows you to upload a PowerPoint presentation to the Presentation  
Player. Once uploaded, you can display the entire presentation using the hand-held remote control.  
While this feature allows great freedom and mobility, please consider the following when uploading a  
presentation to the Presentation Player:  
Once uploaded, anyone can use the remote control to view the presentation on a monitor, so take  
precautions if your presentation contains sensitive or confidential material.  
The PC attempting to upload a presentation must have Microsoft PowerPoint 97 or later installed.

Some features, such as animation, hyperlinks, and sound will not be available once your presentation is  
uploaded.  
The Presentation Player comes with 32Mb of storage for your presentations. This allows enough room for  
several presentations. However, be sure to remove your presentations when they are no longer needed to  
make room for new files.  
Take Control of the Presentation Player. This feature allows you to conveniently transfer the contents of  
your local PC screen to the projector or monitor that is connected to the Player where the presentation will  
be displayed. You may notice some delay in mouse and keyboard function. Such a delay is normal for this  
mode of operation. Only one user at a time can control the Presentation Player. The supported display  
resolutions are 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768. Please see your Windows documentation for more information  
on changing your display settings.  
Give Control to Another User. To pause your presentation or change presenters, click this button.  
Exit (Stop). To exit the Control utility, click this button.  
5. If you click the Upload Presentation button, the screen in Figure 7-5 will appear. Click the Browse button to

Remote Display  
The Presentation Player has a built-in image viewer and internal storage, so you can give a presentation without  
an attached PC. All you need to do is load the presentation files onto the system in advance, then you can deliver  
a presentation using the remote control. The Player also has a the remote display function to switch users during  
a presentation.  
1. To load your presentation, go to the Upload Presentation Section of Chapter 5: Using the Presentation Player’s  
Web-Based Utility. To learn about the Remote Control, go to The Remote Control’s Buttons in Chapter 2.  
2. Make sure that the Presentation Player is connected to the projector or monitor and that both devices are  
powered on. The screen in Figure 8-1 will appear. It is referred to as the Home page. If you click on a screen’s  
Home button, you will return here.  
The three buttons on this screen are described below and in the following paragraphs.  
Remote Users. Click this button to view and connect to the remote users. It will list the remote users whose  
PCs are connected to the Player. The screen in Figure 8-2 will appear. To use, select a user, then click  
Connect to connect the user to the network, click Delete to remove the user from the network, or if finished

Chapter 9: Using a USB Memory Disk to Install Files  
Overview  
Before you can use a USB memory disk, you will need to convert your Power Point presentation file. To convert  
your file, you must first install the converter software on your PC. If you already installed the Setup Wizard on your  
PC, then you already have Presentation Converter installed. After you convert your file, the Presentation Player  
will be able to accept the presentation from your USB disk.  
Installation  
When you use a memory disk device to install your presentation on the Presentation Player, you must first install  
the converter software on your PC.  
1. Insert the Setup CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The CD’s Wizard should start automatically and the  
Welcome page for the Setup Utility will appear (as shown in Figure 9-1).  
If it does not start automatically, click the Start button, select Run, and enter d:\setup.exe (where “d” is the  
letter of your CD-ROM drive) in the Open field to start the autorun program.

On the Welcome page, click the Install Presentation Converter for USB Memory Disk tab to start the  
installation procedure and install the application on your current PC.  
Click the User Guide tab to use this User Guide. Click the Exit tab to close the Setup Utility.  
2. Click the Setup tab and the Wizard will begin the installation procedure. A screen like that shown in Figure  
9-2 will appear.  
Read the license agreement and click the Yes tab to accept the terms and continue the installation procedure.  
If you click No, you will end the installation procedure.

3. The next screen, like that shown in Figure 9-3, will allow you to choose where the Setup Utility will install the  
Control Utility and the Presentation Converter. By default, the destination folder is C:\Program  
Files\Linksys\Wireless.  
If you want to change the location, click the Browse tab and select another destination for the installation.  
Click the Next tab to continue.  
4. The Wizard will now be ready to begin copying the program files, as shown in Figure 9-4.

appendix provides solutions to problems that may occur during the installation and operation of the Wireless-B  
Media Adapter. Read the description below to solve your problems. If you can't find an answer here, check the  
Linksys website at www.linksys.com.  
Common Problems and Solutions  
1. Can I run an application from a remote computer over the wireless network?  
This will depend on whether or not the application is designed to be used over a network. Consult the  
application’s user guide to determine if it supports operation over a network.  
2. Can I use the Presentation Player with non-Linksys wireless equipment?  
Yes, as long as you use it with wireless equipment that complies with the IEEE 802.11b or 802.11g standard.  
3. What IEEE 802.11b features are supported?  
The product supports the following IEEE 802.11 functions:  
•CSMA/CA plus Acknowledge protocol  
•Multi-Channel Roaming  
•Automatic Rate Selection  
•RTS/CTS feature  
•Fragmentation  
•Power Management  
4. The Presentation Player’s Control Utility cannot detect the Presentation Player.  
Verify that the Presentation Player’s power is on and all of your wireless equipment complies with the  
802.11g standard and if you are connecting to the Presentation Gateway with a network cable, check the  
cable connection to the Presentation Player. Make sure the Presentation Player's IP Address and PC are in the  
same range. If you are using a wireless PC to connect, make sure that you are associated to the Presentation  
Player and the wireless settings match.  
5. Do I need to set my PC to Static IP or Dynamic DHCP to connect to the Presentation Player?  
If your PC is set to Obtain an IP Address Automatically when associating/connecting your wireless PC to the  
wireless presentation gateway, the Presentation player will assign an IP address to your wireless PC. If your  
PC is set to Static IP Address, make sure that your PC's IP Address is in the same range as the Presentation  
Player.

6. I have a PowerPoint presentation in my USB disk that is plugged into the Presentation Player, but the  
file does not show up on the Player.  
You will first need to convert the PowerPoint file before connecting it to the Presentation Player. Use the  
Converter Utility to convert the files and save them back to the USB disk. Once complete, unplug the USB disk  
from your PC and plug it back into the Presentation Player.  
7. I'm playing a video on my PC but when watching on a projector through the Presentation Player, the  
video is not smooth.  
The presentation player is taking snapshots of your desktop and transmitting to the screen frame by frame.  
Therefore, you will see many snapshots.  
8. Do I need to convert the PowerPoint presentations using the Presentation Converter before uploading  
to the Player?  
No, if you are using the Control Utility to upload your PowerPoint presentation, the control utility will  
automatically convert the file and upload to your Presentation Player.  
9. I cannot find a list of PCs in the Remote Users section on the Presentation Player screen.  
Make sure that your PC is connected to the Presentation Player and the Control Utility is installed. You will first  
need to take control of the Presentation Player so your PC can show up in the Remote Users list.  
10.My SSID always starts with wpg54g - , can I change it to something else?  
No, but you can create a unique SSID after the “wpg54g - ". Having the "wpg54g" helps users identify the  
unit when mulitple wireless networks are around.  
11.I have more than one Presentation Player, so how can I identify which one I am connecting to?  
We recommend that you assign a unique player name to each Presentation Player if you have more than one.  
This can be done by logging into the web user interface utility of the player and changing the player’s name. If  
you are running the control utility and you see mulitple Presentation Players, you can identify them by the last  
four digits of the MAC address that is displayed after the player’s name.  
12.What is the default IP address on my Wireless-G Presentation Player?  
The default IP address is: 192.168.1.200.  
13.I want to convert my files on my USB disk, but I don't want to install the control utility.  
Insert the CD and install the Converter Utility for the USB Disk instead of the Control Utility.  
14.Can more than one PC take control of the Wireless-G Presentation player?  
No, the Presentation Player can only be controlled by one PC at a time. If you want to switch between PCs,

What is the IEEE 802.11g standard?  
It is one of the IEEE standards for wireless networks. The 802.11g standard allows wireless networking hardware

The 802.11g standard states a maximum data transfer rate of 54Mbps and an operating frequency of 2.4GHz.  
What is ad-hoc mode?  
When a wireless network is set to ad-hoc mode, the wireless-equipped computers are configured to

What is infrastructure mode?

To achieve true seamless connectivity, the wireless LAN must incorporate a number of different functions. Each  
node and Wireless Network Access Point, for example, must always acknowledge receipt of each message. Each  
node must maintain contact with the wireless network even when not actually transmitting data. Achieving these  
functions simultaneously requires a dynamic RF networking technology that links Wireless Network Access  
Points and nodes. In such a system, the user’s end node undertakes a search for the best possible access to the  
system. First, it evaluates such factors as signal strength and quality, as well as the message load currently being  
carried by each Wireless Network Access Point and the distance of each Wireless Network Access Point to the  
wired backbone. Based on that information, the node next selects the right Wireless Network Access Point and  
registers its address. Communications between end node and host computer can then be transmitted up and  
down the backbone.

Linksys wants to make wireless networking as safe and easy for you as possible. The current generation of  
Linksys products provide several network security features, but they require specific action on your part for  
implementation. So, keep the following in mind whenever you are setting up or using your wireless network.  
Security Precautions  
The following is a complete list of security precautions to take (at least steps 1 through 5 should be followed):  
1. Change the default SSID.  
2. Disable SSID Broadcast.  
3. Change the default password for the Administrator account.  
4. Enable MAC Address Filtering.  
Note: Some of these security features are  
available only through the network router or  
access point. Refer to the router or access  
point’s documentation for more information.  
5. Change the SSID periodically.  
6. Use the highest encryption algorithm possible. Use WPA if it is available. Please note that this may reduce  
your network performance.  
7. Change the WEP encryption keys periodically.  
For information on implementing these security features, refer to “Chapter 5: Configuring the Wireless-B  
Broadband Router.”  
Security Threats Facing Wireless Networks  
Wireless networks are easy to find. Hackers know that in order to join a wireless network, wireless networking  
products first listen for “beacon messages”. These messages can be easily decrypted and contain much of the  
network’s information, such as the network’s SSID (Service Set Identifier). Here are the steps you can take:  
Change the administrator’s password regularly. With every wireless networking device you use, keep in  
mind that network settings (SSID, WEP keys, etc.) are stored in its firmware. Your network administrator is the  
only person who can change network settings. If a hacker gets a hold of the administrator’s password, he, too,  
can change those settings. So, make it harder for a hacker to get that information. Change the administrator’s  
password regularly.

SSID. There are several things to keep in mind about the SSID:  
1. Disable Broadcast  
2. Make it unique  
3. Change it often  
Most wireless networking devices will give you the option of broadcasting the SSID. While this option may be  
more convenient, it allows anyone to log into your wireless network. This includes hackers. So, don’t broadcast  
the SSID.  
Wireless networking products come with a default SSID set by the factory. (The Linksys default SSID is “linksys”.)  
Hackers know these defaults and can check these against your network. Change your SSID to something unique  
and not something related to your company or the networking products you use.  
Change your SSID regularly so that any hackers who have gained access to your wireless network will have to  
start from the beginning in trying to break in.  
MAC Addresses. Enable MAC Address filtering. MAC Address filtering will allow you to provide access to only  
those wireless nodes with certain MAC Addresses. This makes it harder for a hacker to access your network with  
a random MAC Address.  
WEP Encryption. Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is often looked upon as a cure-all for wireless security  
concerns. This is overstating WEP’s ability. Again, this can only provide enough security to make a hacker’s job  
more difficult.  
There are several ways that WEP can be maximized:  
1. Use the highest level of encryption possible  
2. Use “Shared Key” authentication  
Important: Always remember that each  
device in your wireless network MUST use  
the same encryption method and encryption  
key or your wireless network will not function  
properly.  
3. Change your WEP key regularly  
WPA. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is the newest and best available standard in Wi-Fi security. Two modes are

password in the Pre-Shared key field of 8-64 characters, and enter a Group Key Renewal period time  
between 0 and 99,999 seconds, which instructs the Router or other device how often it should change the  
encryption keys.

server is connected to the Router or other device.) First, select the type of WPA algorithm, TKIP or AES. Enter

The Presentation Player functions with the use of firmware, which is the programming written in the unit’s  
internal memory. It is this firmware that enables the Presentation Player to function and makes it easy to use.  
Occasionally, this firmware will be upgraded, which could increase the Presentation Player’s stability or make it  
The Presentation Player's firmware is upgraded through the Web-Utility's Administration tab. Follow these  
instructions:  
1. Download the firmware from Linksys's website at www.linksys.com.  
2. Click the Web-Utility's Administration tab, and the Setup screen, shown in Figure C-1, will appear.  
3. Enter the location of the firmware's file or click the Browse button to find the file.

All wireless products require Microsoft Windows. Windows is the most used operating system in the world and  
comes with many features that help make networking easier. These features can be accessed through Windows  
Help and are described in this appendix.  
TCP/IP  
Before a computer can communicate with the Presentation Player, TCP/IP must be enabled. TCP/IP is a set of  
instructions, or protocol, all PCs follow to communicate over a network. This is true for wireless networks as well.  
Your PCs will not be able to utilize wireless networking without having TCP/IP enabled. Windows Help provides  
complete instructions on enabling TCP/IP.  
Shared Resources  
If you wish to share printers, folder, or files over your network, Windows Help provides complete instructions on  
utilizing shared resources.  
Network Neighborhood/My Network Places  
Other PCs on your network will appear under Network Neighborhood or My Network Places (depending upon the

Access Point - Device that allows wireless-equipped computers and other devices to communicate with a wired

CTS (Clear To Send) - A signal sent by a device to indicate that it is ready to receive data.

ISP (Internet Service Provider) - A company that provides access to the Internet.  
LAN (Local Area Network) - The computers and networking products that make up the network in your home or

MAC (Media Access Control) Address - The unique address that a manufacturer assigns to each networking  
device.  
Mbps (Megabits Per Second) - One million bits per second; a unit of measurement for data transmission.  
Multicasting - Sending data to a group of destinations at once.  
NAT (Network Address Translation) - NAT technology translates IP addresses of a local area network to a  
different IP address for the Internet.  
Network - A series of computers or devices connected for the purpose of data sharing, storage, and/or  
transmission between users.  
NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) - The protocol used to connect to Usenet groups on the Internet.  
Node - A network junction or connection point, typically a computer or work station.  
OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) - A type of modulation technology that separates the data  
stream into a number of lower-speed data streams, which are then transmitted in parallel. Used in 802.11a,  
802.11g, and powerline networking.  
Packet - A unit of data sent over a network.  
Passphrase - Used much like a password, a passphrase simplifies the WEP encryption process by automatically  
generating the WEP encryption keys for Linksys products.  
Ping (Packet INternet Groper) - An Internet utility used to determine whether a particular IP address is online.  
POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) - A standard protocol used to retrieve e-mail stored on a mail server.  
Port - 1. The connection point on a computer or networking device used for plugging in a cable or an adapter. 2.  
The virtual connection point through which a computer uses a specific application on a server.

PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) - A type of broadband connection that provides authentication  
(username and password) in addition to data transport.  
PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) - A VPN protocol that allows the Point to Point Protocol (PPP) to be  
tunneled through an IP network. This protocol is also used as a type of broadband connection in Europe.  
Preamble - Part of the wireless signal that synchronizes network traffic.  
RJ-45 (Registered Jack-45) - An Ethernet connector that holds up to eight wires.  
Roaming - The ability to take a wireless device from one access point's range to another without losing the  
connection.  
Router - A networking device that connects multiple networks together, such as a local network and the Internet.  
RTS (Request To Send) - A packet sent when a computer has data to transmit. The computer will wait for a CTS  
(Clear To Send) message before sending data.  
Server - Any computer whose function in a network is to provide user access to files, printing, communications,  
and other services.  
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) - The standard e-mail protocol on the Internet.  
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) - A widely used network monitoring and control protocol.  
Software - Instructions for the computer. A series of instructions that performs a particular task is called a  
"program".  
Spread Spectrum - Wideband radio frequency technique used for more reliable and secure data transmission.  
SSID (Service Set IDentifier) - Your wireless network's name.  
Static IP Address - A fixed address assigned to a computer or device that is connected to a network.  
Static Routing - Forwarding data in a network via a fixed path.  
Subnet Mask - An address code that determines the size of the network.  
Switch - 1. Device that is the central point of connection for computers and other devices in a network, so data  
can be shared at full transmission speeds. 2. A device for making, breaking, or changing the connections in an
